Philander Smith University Names Alumnus Vernon Harris as New Director of the University Choir

 

Little Rock, Ark. (June 13, 2024) – Philander Smith University (PSU) is thrilled to name alumnus Vernon Harris, ’03, as the new Director of the University Choir.

As a recent quarterfinalist for the 2025 Grammy Music Educator Award, Harris's dedication and excellence have left a lasting impact. At Pulaski Heights Middle School in Little Rock, he excelled as Department Chair and Teacher and significantly advanced choral music education, leading his students to achieve superior competition ratings. Beyond the classroom, he has made notable contributions to the music industry, collaborating with renowned artists and working on major musical theater
productions. Since 2008, Harris has also served as the Minister of Music at ACTS Church in Conway, directing a comprehensive music program.

Harris’s educational background and professional experiences provide a solid foundation for his leadership of the University Choir.  In addition to his Bachelor of Business in Business Administration from Philander Smith College (now Philander Smith University), he holds a Master of Education in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership from Arkansas Tech University.

“We are excited to welcome back a distinguished Philanderian whose talent and expertise will undoubtedly elevate our University Choir to new heights” said Dr. Shannon Clowney Johnson, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer.

“Mr. Harris’ skills and unique perspective will significantly impact the music and performing arts at Philander Smith University.”
Interim President Cynthia A. Bond Hopson, Ph.D., shared her enthusiasm, stating, “Vernon Harris embodies the spirit and tradition of excellence that we cherish at Philander Smith University. His return is a win-win for our music program and the entire university community.”

Harris’s appointment is set to begin on July 1.
