PSU Athletics Names New Assistant Basketball Coaches

Little Rock, Ark. (January 12, 2024) – The Department of Athletics at Philander Smith University has announced the appointment of two outstanding professionals to its coaching staff. As the university strengthens its athletic programs, Todd Day, Jr. has been appointed as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach and alumna Larena Walker has been named as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach.

In addition to his role as the university’s Sports Information Director, Todd Day, Jr., will assume coaching responsibilities for the Men’s basketball program. A 2017 graduate of Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in Liberal Studies and a Minor in Physical Education, Todd brings notable coaching experience to include assisting with PSU men’s basketball operations; guiding an AAU team for four years; and leading the EYBL (Elite Youth Basketball League) Team for a one-year stint. Coach Day has an extensive knowledge base and the enthusiasm to elevate the men’s basketball program. The elder Coach Day stated, “Todd Day, Jr. is committed to mentoring our student-athletes to become productive young men.”

Having been employed by the university for more than two years, Larena Walker also serves as the Assistant to the Director of Athletics and now takes on the role of Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach. Walker is a 2022 alumna of Philander Smith, holding a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Healthcare Administration and Marketing. A standout guard and team captain for the Lady Panthers Basketball Program, Walker holds a 2022 GCAC regular season conference champion title, and in the same season was named to the Women’s Basketball All-Defensive Team. While a student, Walker was initiated in the Gamma Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and was a member of various clubs and organizations. She believes that “you have to believe in yourself when no one does—and, when you have a dream, you’ve got to grab and never let go.”

Interim Athletic Director Brandon Greenwood stated, “Both Day and Walker are poised to make significant contributions to our basketball programs. Their dedication, experience, and commitment to the development of student-athletes aligns with Philander Smith University’s core values. Their impact will be felt not only on the basketball court but also in the lives of our student-athletes and throughout our university community.”
