PSU Appoints Two Exceptional Assistant Basketball Coaches

Little Rock, Ark. (January 12, 2024) – Philander Smith University proudly announces the appointment of two outstanding professionals to the coaching staff in the Department of Athletics. As the university strengthens its athletic programs, Todd Day, Jr. has been appointed as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, and Larena Walker has been appointed as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach.

In addition to his role as the university’s Sports Information Director, Todd Day, Jr., will assume coaching responsibilities for the men’s basketball program. A 2017 graduate of Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in Liberal Studies and a Minor in Physical Education, Todd brings notable coaching experience to include assisting with PSU men’s basketball operations; guiding an AAU team for four years; and leading the EYBL (Elite Youth Basketball League) Team for a one year stint. Coach Day has an extensive knowledge base and the enthusiasm to elevate the men’s basketball program. Day stated, that “he is committed to mentoring our student-athletes to become productive young men”.

Having been employed by the university for more than two years, Larena Walker also serves as the Assistant to the Director of Athletics. Coach Walker now takes on the role of Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach. Walker is a proud ’22 alumna of Philander Smith College, holding a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Healthcare Administration and Marketing. A standout guard and team captain for the Lady Panthers Basketball Program, Walker holds a 2022 GCAC regular season conference champion title, and in the same season named to the Women’s Basketball All-Defensive Team. While a student a Philander, Walker became a member of the Gamma Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and a member of various clubs and organizations. Walker believes that “you have to believe in yourself when no one does—and, when you have a dream, you’ve got to grab and never let go”.

Interim Athletic Director Brandon Greenwood stated, that “both Day and Walker are poised to make significant contributions to our basketball programs. These professionals’ dedication, experience, and commitment to the development of student-athletes align with Philander Smith University’s core values. Their impact will be felt not only on the basketball court but also in the lives of our student-athletes and our entire university community”.
