Little Rock, Ark. (August 21, 2017) --- As the world’s attention was focused on the solar eclipse, Director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) Maria Markham paid a visit to Philander Smith College today as a part of her plan to visit all of the state’s colleges and universities.
Dr. Roderick Smothers, PSC President, shared the College’s history and mission with Markham while expressing his excitement about the College’s new vision for the future. He also expressed his continued eagerness to partner with ADHE and other state agencies to solve some of Arkansas’ challenges around education, health care, community engagement and the economy.
The wide-ranging conversation also covered topics related to remediation, college affordability and efforts designed to address the teaching shortage in Arkansas. After which, Dr. Smothers led Markham on a tour of the campus in which she was able to meet and engage with several members of the Philander Smith faculty and student body.
