General Education

The Division of General Education contributes to the College’s mission by preparing students to become “academically accomplished.”

Designed to ensure students are well-prepared with the skills needed for success in the major, the General Education curriculum follows a model of student development that is coherent, intentional, integrated, and addresses intellectual skill acquisitions, interdisciplinary applications of knowledge, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, social justice awareness, leadership, and on-going self-reflection.

Students are placed into foundational courses based on their scores on the ACT or SAT. A score of 17 or below on the ACT places a student in College English and College Reading, and a score of 16 or below places a student into Math Foundations.  For the SAT, scores below 500 place a student in college foundational courses in all of the aforementioned subject areas.

For the following courses, a student must earn a grade of “C” or higher at the end of the semester to advance into the next higher level course: College English, College Reading, Math Foundations, College Math, College Algebra, Composition I, and Composition II.

The Division of General Education supports the College’s philosophy to embed the Timeless Human Values: Respect for Self, Respect for Others, Respect for PSC, Leadership, Scholarship, Spirituality, and Service.
