HBCU Shines Spotlight on Academic Excellence of Area High School Scholars
Philander Smith College celebrated academic excellence in the African American community Sunday, February 27 in the Wally Allen Ballroom of the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock.
Now in its seventh year, the African American High School Honors Ceremony was created to spotlight the academic achievement of academically talented Black students in Central Arkansas. Receiving honors were nearly 200 high school seniors with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher from Little Rock School District, North Little Rock School District, Pulaski County Special School District, and Jacksonville-North Pulaski School District, as well as Lisa Academy, eStem Public Charter High School and other area charter and private schools. For their scholastic achievements, honorees received a certificate and medallion, and Philander Smith offered eligible students millions of dollars in scholarships.
“During Black History Month, we tend to center our reflections on the accomplishments of the past. Our ‘African American High School Honors Ceremony,’ however, is a vehicle that allows us to focus on the gifted and talented young people in Central Arkansas who aspire to be the trailblazers and leaders of tomorrow,” says President Roderick L. Smothers, Sr. “Philander Smith College is delighted to uplift these students and potentially be a part of the next phase of their academic careers.”
