- Coronavirus Updates
In light of the current extraordinary conditions, Philander Smith College is offering a Pass/Fail (P/F) grading option for student coursework for the Spring 2020 Semester. This temporary change does not reduce expectations but is an acknowledgement of the severe complications of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic crisis.
Please note the following:
-
Students can designate as many of their Spring 2020 Semester courses as P/F as they wish.
-
Typically, grades of C or better are considered to be passing and grades of D or F are considered not passing.
-
Students should refer to the grading scale in each class syllabus to confirm what letter grade constitutes as passing for that particular course.
-
With the Interim Grading Policy, students have the flexibility to choose to receive a letter grade in one course and a Pass/Fail in another course.
-
Courses that are selected for P/F grades during Spring 2020 will count towards curricular, major, academic progress, and graduation requirements.
-
More information on the pass/fail grading system will be provided via email from the Division of Academic Affairs.
-
Questions related to progress toward degree requirements, SAP, academic probation, and/or implications for financial aid are addressed within the Interim Grading Policy which is available for review on the College’s Coronavirus Updates webpage.
To select the pass/fail grading option, students must email their instructor(s) a completed Pass/Fail Request Form by 5 p.m., April 24, 2020.
Changes are not permitted once the final exam period begins. If the Pass/Fail Request Form is not submitted by the deadline, letter grades of A, B, C, D and F will be assigned as normal.
At the end of the semester, faculty members will evaluate and report grades to the Office of the Registrar following the standard submission process.
We recognize the importance of this modified Grading Policy and the issue of refunds for housing/meal plans for which a decision will be coming soon. Thank you for your patience as we work through the complexities created by COVID-19 and its impact upon the College.
