TRiO

TRiO programs at Philander Smith College are programs 100% federally-funded by the U.S. Department of Education and are designed to generate the skills and motivation needed for success in both high school and post-secondary education. At Philander Smith, these programs include the Upward Bound Classic Program (Grades 9-12) and Upward Bound Math/Science Center (Grades 9-12).

Upward Bound Classic

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post secondary education.

Services Provided by the Program Include:

    * Summer programs of ACT prep and tutoring in all subjects;
    * Year-round counseling, tutoring and academic advisement;
    * Exposure to College faculty and facilities;

If you are interested in pursuing a college degree after you finish high school, Upward Bound Classic may be for you; however you must make serious commitment to the UB Program.


Upward Bound Math & Science

The Upward Bound Math and Science program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science, and ultimately careers in the math and science profession.

Services Provided by the Program Include:

    * Summer programs of intensive math and science training;
    * Year-round counseling, tutoring and academic advisement;
    * Exposure to College faculty who conduct research in math/science;
    * Computer training; and
    * Participant-conducted scientific research under the guidance of a faculty member or graduate student serving as the participant's mentor

If you are interested in pursuing a college degree in math and science after you finish high school, Upward Bound Math and Science may be for you; however you must make serious commitment to the UB Program.
