PSC Health Services Department
About Us
Philander Smith College provides a comprehensive health care program to all enrolled students. The health care services are provided by an off-campus family practice physician, Dr. Harold Betton, and an on-campus health care provider functioning in a dual role, Christal Waller, a registered nurse and an advanced practice nurse, who specializes in women’s health. Students can be evaluated and treated for most health care issues. Female students have access to an even broader range of health care services provided by Nurse Waller including, but not limited to clinical breast exams, pelvic exams and sexually transmitted disease (STD) screening. The Health Services Department’s primary goals are to promote health care management, facilitate disease prevention, provide health care information and increase awareness of health issues significant to this population. These services are available for the faculty, staff and student body.
In an effort to achieve these goals, Philander Smith College has available for the full time undergraduate student a supplemental health insurance policy designed to absorb some of the financial burden often incurred as a result of receiving health care services. The insurance covers sickness and injuries not covered or payable by any other plan (or from any other source) providing medical expense benefits. The services rendered by the RN/APN and the Family Practice Physician are provided at no cost to the students.
The Health Services Center is located in the Residential Life Center (RLC), suite 125 and is open Monday – Thursday; various hours. The staff can be reached any time at (501) 370-4125 or (501) 804-5709. The doctor's office is located within walking distance of the campus should the student desire services at times other than those scheduled. Transportation is provided by the College for the student with this need.
