>> THE FRESHMEN ARRIVE: New students from across the U.S., Nassau, Bahamas, and Rwanda arrived on campus Saturday, Aug. 15 and moved into the Residential Life Center. The class of about 250 students represents one of the largest freshmen classes in more than four years.
New Student Orientation was offered from Aug. 15-18 to help new students become familiar with academic and student life at Philander Smith College prior to the start of classes Wednesday, Aug. 19.

When students return to campus this fall, they will find the old Barracks on campus transformed into a modern, state-of-the-art residence hall for nineteen honors students. Construction is expected to be completed after Labor Day.

>> DIVERSITY REIGNS: First Latina woman elected Miss PSC
Philander Smith College students made history this past spring by electing 20-year-old Francennett Herrera to serve as Miss Philander Smith College, becoming the first woman of Mexican origin to win the title of campus queen. The junior political science major from Chicago will be crowned in a coronation ceremony at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 in the Tate Recreation Center.
